That first deep breath as you sink onto the massage table, the room dim and quiet, the soft scent of oils wrapping around you, muscles slowly letting go until, for a moment, it feels like you can just be. But massage is far from a one-size-fits-all therapy. From easing tight muscles to melting away stress, every different type of massage does very different things.
Two of the most popular choices in Australia right now are hot stone massage and deep tissue massage. Here’s a guide to help you figure out which one suits you best.

A hot stone massage is exactly as advertised! A massage where smooth, heated stones are placed on key points of your body while your therapist glides over muscles with gentle pressure. “The heat penetrates deep into the tissue, helping to release tension, improve circulation and trigger a state of relaxation,” says Elena, a massage therapist at Nurture Mind & Body, a spa and wellness centre in Sydney’s Paddington.
Some therapists even use the stones like extra hands, sliding them across your back, shoulders and legs for an almost hypnotic effect. “People often leave feeling lighter, with their shoulders looser and their mind calmer. As a bonus, the resulting improved blood flow delivers oxygen and nutrients where your body needs them most,” adds Elena. And if anxiety or sleepless nights have been hanging around, the kind of deep relaxation this massage offers can feel surprisingly magical.

Deep tissue massage is a different beast entirely. It digs deep into the muscle layers and connective tissue with slow, deliberate strokes that hunt down the spots where tension likes to hide. Unlike a standard rub that might skim the surface, deep tissue massage makes you feel every stubborn knot unravelling.
“If you like strong pressure to work out the tightness, this is it,” says Elena. “Deep tissue massage uses firmer pressure to release chronic muscle tension and ease discomfort.”
Corrective, targeted and highly effective, remedial therapists often mix in stretching or trigger point work to hit the spots that hurt the most, making it the go-to for postural problems, sports injuries and stubborn pain around the neck, shoulders and lower back.
“The method that is best for you comes down to what you want and need from your massage,” says Elena. If you want to relax and de-stress, hot stone massage is the go. If you’re dealing with deep knots, persistent aches or are recovering from exercise, deep tissue massage is probably a better choice.
Many people switch between the two, using hot stone massage for downtime and deep tissue for problem areas. That way you get the best of both worlds without overdoing it.
“Alternating massages like this keeps your body balanced,” says Elena. “Hot stone helps your muscles relax, while deep tissue tackles the tension before it turns into a bigger issue.”
Regular sessions are key for long-term results. “Consistency is everything,” Elena adds. “Even if you feel fine, keeping up with regular treatments stops small aches from snowballing into chronic pain and your body will thank you for it.”
Both hot stone massage and deep tissue massage are widely available in Australia, from day spas to dedicated clinics. A quick chat with your therapist can help you decide which style fits your body and lifestyle or whether a mixed session is worth trying.
